okay, this falls under chick flick..

One movie that had a lot of intercultural/interracial relationships featured was Love Actually. I loved that movie even though I’m not that crazy about all chick flicks.
Although in this movie these relationships are treated the same way Hollywood treats them - like they are completely commonplace and nobody ever raises an eyebrow. So depending on whether you think that’s a good thing or find it annoying…
but anyway it’s a good one.

Chinese Movie

Eat Drink Man Woman (Yin Shi Nan Nu) 1994

my fave Chinese director Ang Lee - good chick flick. :)

Chinese movie

Raise the Red Lantern

one of those really depressing movies where really nothing good or positive happens — so only for those who love that kind of thing… But still a good flick.

American movie :

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - my post on that:

Salaam-E-Ishq (hindi)

“Six young couples in different situations, face different quandaries. All their problems are apparently caused by love, too much, too little, love for the wrong people, love for people who don’t want it, unrequited love, amnesia-afflicted love and what have you. Each of the 6 stories is moderately developed, the most believable being the Hindu-Muslim couple - the Ashutosh-Tehzeeb (John and Vidya) story. Then there is the starlet hungry to make it big, hatching up a publicity stunt which backfires - the Kkamini-Rahul (Priyanka-Salman) deal. The 3rd pair is that of Stephanie-Raju (Shannon and Govinda) pair, she searching for her faithless Indian boyfriend and he the Indian taxi-driver who ferries her around the country. And then there is the Shiven-Gia (Akshaye-Ayesha) yuppie marriage fiasco, with the groom with the cold-feet. The 5th story is of the stable married couple - Vinay-Seema (Anil and Juhi), whose 15 year marriage is threatened when the husband wants more than just boring, suburban life. The 6th couple’s story is of Isha-Sohail as a rural couple unable to give vent to their passion. The film runs through these 6 stories almost in parallel, taking us to their respective conclusions.”

Extremely sad parts and extremely happy parts.. just like any bollywood movie. The story of Shannon on her Indian boyfriend really gets me…

Bend It Like Beckham - though not specifically about marriage, the movie does a GREAT job showing how cultural differences affect relationships.

Book:
The Color of Water by James McBride - A Black Man’s tribute to his white mother.

The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

Fantastic and there’s a movie too!

For some reason, my fav books are Chinese/Asian fiction.

I like several Amy Tan books, but havent read her latest 2 yet. Just finished “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” by Lisa See. It was pretty good.
“The Last Empress” by Anchee Min, I couldnt put down. Wish I had read the prequel first.

“The Samurai’s Garden” was a nice simple read by Gail Tsukiyama. Its about a Chinese boy sent to live in rural Japan when the Japanese are entering China. The author is born to a Chinese mom and Japanese dad. Also read “Night of Many Dreams” it was ok.

Uhh, I know Ive read more good ones, but my memory has gotten so bad.

Oh, and CA, Ive seen the Red Lantern movie. Interesting and sad.

Chinese:
Amy Tan’s “Hundred Secret Senses”

Intercultural:
Isabel Allende’s “Portrait in Sepia” and “Daughter of Fortune” (girl from Chile meets and loves guy from China)

Bollywood
I love them more than my husband does, although he will tolerate some. We both cracked up at “Salaam Namaste”-the actor who said “I don’t the like the Indians” and “Babes” all the time while dressed like Crocodile Dundee was hilarious. “Salaam e Ishq” is an emotional rollercoaster, I agree. “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” has some great songs-love the one when they are around the pyramids, but when the movie moves to England it goes downhill.

Anybody have any advice on how to get a Kannada movie in the US? I’ve never seen one. Are any subtitled? Any recommendations?

I like Amy Tan too. I remember when Joy Luck Club came out - that was a good one!
