Vacation Bible School

This year is the first year DD is able to participate in Vacation Bible School. I happily signed her up and then received a “volunteer” form in the mail. I thought, “Sure! I can help!” The form gave a list of areas they needed help with and you were to circle which days you could help. So I naively said I’d help with “snacks,” thinking this meant I was to send snacks or maybe come up and help distribute at a certain time. I circled all the days meaning that any would be fine with me – not that I wanted to do it each day, but I didn’t *think* that’s what they meant. Saresh likes to annoy me by reminding me that when I “assume” I make an ass out of you and me. It’s annoying only in that he always ends up being right.

Then last week I got a letter saying that I was going to be helping with snacks Mon-Fri – but it didn’t give any more info. I finally called this morning to ask what exactly my responsibility would be. Turns out I’m to be there the ENTIRE time each day to prepare and distribute snacks as different shifts of children rotate in for snack time. They totally snagged a newbie on this one. My first thoughts went something like this, “But that’s half a day! But that’s my whole week! But it’s FOOD SERVICE – I don’t like food service! But that’s going to be boring! Crap, I’m such a selfish, bad Christian!”

I know I volunteered and I’m supposed to be doing this is His service, so if they told me to scrub the toilets for VBS I should do it and not complain. They are providing a special time for my child, and at no cost to us to boot. I have 3 days left to work myself out of my bad attitude and buck up for my week of food service. I figure I should be at least passive about it by Monday. I do get to work with two other moms I like, so I figure I’ll end up having fun (I repeat this as necessary as part of my bucking up process).

All of that complaining was to say that apparently God (or at least my church) wishes my rapt attention for the duration of next week as I prepare peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Kool-Aid for legions of small children and try to remember the higher reason of why I’m doing it. In other words, I won’t be around here much next week, and I may not get much written before then. CA has some good stuff still to post though and I’ll check in as I can in the afternoons or evenings (maybe… LOL). (So your comments may not go up in a timely fashion.)

And I’m getting a new modem, hopefully tomorrow, because this one is on it’s last leg and I have random internet access (in and out about every 30 seconds or so – highly annoying), making my time on here sparse of late – wish me luck in hooking it up!

And on a totally random note for the weekend, Saresh took off today and he and DD and I went to the track to run and then to the park. On the way back home, there were two Indian boys around 13 yrs old walking (ahem… flirting) with two cutie white girls in white tank tops about the same age. They were all walking together. I had to smile and I said to Saresh, “If their mamas knew where they were right now, they’d be in a world of trouble!” He chuckled and said he was just thinking the same thing while smiling to himself.

  1. They really should have made their form more specific and you can bring that up to them. Also, any time you spend there is tax deductible as well as your mileage and and any foods you provide so save your receipts!

  2. “They really should have made their form more specific and you can bring that up to them.”

You got that right! I actually told the gal when I called that since I hadn’t done VBS before, I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do (it didn’t even say where to go in the church), and she was like, “Huh – I guess we didn’t include any of that.” Well, yeah!

I think they just assumed (like me – ha ha) that everyone had done it before and would know the routine and what they were volunteering for.

  3. Outrigger Island, right???

I almost got snagged for that too, but it’s the same week we are here on vaca (which has rapidly turned into hell, btw). I just KNEW there was something fishy about the total lack of information on the sign-up sheets. LOL

and about the 2 young flirts – the cycle just keeps on. I hope they have smooth sailing! ;)

  4. I hope they at least let you know if any of the children have allergies. PBJ might not go over well with some of the parents. :(

    Good luck next week, CBC!

  5. CA – No, it’s “God’s Big Backyard” – they went with a different curriculum. I’m not sure who did this one. Seems cute though.

FW – I just made up the pbj (sorry ;) ). I wasn’t sure what they were having me prepare yet. It’s just my daughter survives on pbj, so peanut butter is always on my mind so that’s the first thing I thought of when they said I’d be preparing snacks the whole time. The Kool-Aid part is probably accurate though!

  6. I hope you get some help on that CBC. They always rotated parents/older siblings at our VBS. I thoroughly enjoyed VBS as a child, it was some of my best memories from childhood. I hope DD enjoys it as well :)

  7. At ours, they had pb & j, plain pb, plain cheese and then some sort of fruit like apples with peanut butter, and then some juice as well. It usually covered most of the allergies that way… and if someone’s child had a special need, they were supposed to help by supplying a snack for them that they’d prepared at home.

  8. Okay – I have to admit I totally had fun today. We made “Moses in a Basket” (pigs in a blanket) for the snack, and even when we weren’t busy, we all had a good time talking. Plus I got to see DD every once in a while when she came through the social hall. She was having a blast.

Tomorrow is S’mores. Apparently we’re planning on loading them up with sugar the rest of the week, then sending them home to their parents. I would do my evil laugh at that except that my kid is also eating the sugar and coming home with me!

  9. LOL. Not going on the nutritionally responsible route, eh? That’s okay.

Last year at pre-school camp, which is run by a church, but is not VBS, the letter home to the parents promised food from “a variety of cultures”. So I was thinking it would be snacks like mangoes or couscous, but no, it was snacks like Rice Krispie Treats and Popsicles. I politely complained and this year they did so much better serving fresh fruit!

Your idea for Moses in a Basket is too cute! I’m glad you’re having fun!

  10. Moses in a blanket – that’s adorable. ;)

FW, I wish I could get my kids to eat some mango or couscous. LOL If I get a note saying there will be snacks “from multiple cultures” – I will be very worried since my middle kid won’t eat anything but peanut butter and jelly. Seriously – he’s on vitamins it’s so bad. argh argh argh.

  11. Here’s my update for today – I’m going to be FAT by the end of the week. We did S’mores today (Friendship S’mores to go with the “4 friends” story – Mark 2:1-12). Someone thought it would be a good idea to bring dark chocolate for the grown ups to make their own special S’mores with. I had THREE! I’m still not hungry for lunch. Tomorrow we’re having this dirt pudding thing with the gummy worm hanging out, which I won’t want (don’t like pudding), but we’re starting on baking sugar cookies for the next day, so I know I won’t be able to resist a fresh out of the oven cookie (or 2 or 3…)!

On a happier note, the theme for the week is “Serving” – yesterday was about serving your family and how Miriam served her family by looking out for Moses. The whole rest of the day and evening, DD took everyone’s dishes to the sink, picked up the table, picked up her toys, brought me my water cup, and more. She kept asking “is this serving my family?” She was so happy and it was so cute to see the light bulb go off in her head that all the little things she already does, that she wasn’t sure why, were how she was already serving her family and God and why that was important.

I’m also remembering that I miss getting out of the house to work with other grown ups – and also how tired it makes you to get out of the house, be somewhere on time, and work with grown ups!

  12. yeah I’m tired just reading about this. ;) I’m going to be an expert at avoiding volunteering. I think I would volunteer for church stuff way before I would do the school PTA though. Can’t stand being around a whole bunch of other moms with control & dominance issues. I have enough issues of my own.

and you’re making me hungry. I think I’m going to root through the pantry and look for some chocolate.
