MIL and FIL were all worried about us being intercultural – “You come from different cultures! Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah…” Well, what they really should have been worried about for our marriage was electronics. That’s where the big arguments are, baby. Who needs to worry about intercultural divisiveness when you have a DVD player to argue about?
Our DVD player (a Toshiba) is about 5 years old (give or take). It drives me bananas – it won’t play certain DVDs! Sometimes, you pop a disc in and it just won’t play. Other times, you get started on a video just enough to get you hooked and it stops playing. Other times, it just skips through 15-20 minute segments entirely, so your 2 hour movie lasts approximately 45 minutes and you’re kind of sketchy on the plot line. Nothing works to fix it (including banging on the machine) – and it’s totally random.
I have been complaining about this piece of crap player from the first time is didn’t play a disc – Murder by Numbers. I thought it was a fluke until Cinderella – it will play the bonus features disc, but not the movie disc. They there was The Village, and Troy, and many, many, many other DVDs never to be seen on our TV. The last straw though was my Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The thing won’t play Seasons 6 or 7 – AT ALL – not any of the discs in those 2 seasons (Seasons 1-5 are fine – go figure).
I wanted a new DVD player – I didn’t care if it was some $30 no name brand from Big Lots. I just wanted a player that would work, but apparently I wasn’t saying it the right way, or I appeared vague somehow in my ranting about how I HATE our DVD player. I made references to throwing it out the window, to no avail. At any rate, I didn’t demand we go out and buy one (I’m sure I was talking like a girl, expecting him to figure out that I was reaching my boiling point by the cursing and red face instead of just saying what I wanted – thought I thought I really had). Saresh said we’d borrow his mom and dad’s player so I can watch Buffy. I calmed down again by this temporary solution, as their player did play my discs.
BUT (there’s always a “but” in this story), I get halfway through Season 7 and the little monster ATE one of my discs. Four whole episodes of the last season are stuck in this blasted machine. It just stopped working. Saresh came home to find me with a screwdriver ready to dismantle it to rescue my disc. He doesn’t want me to do this, but I told him that DVD is worth more than the player and it won’t work anyway. He tries, can’t get it to work, and succumbs to my idea of autopsy. We did rescue the disc, but had to return MIL and FIL’s player to them in pieces. Now that I’d broken the in-law’s player, we were back to crappy old Toshiba, which seemed to be worse than ever.
At Easter, my mom bought Enchanted for DD. The Saturday night before Easter morning we were going to watch it. Mom had made a blackberry pie and we were all settled in with our hot pie and ice cream, lights off, DVD in and… you guessed it. That was it – the player finally broke me. I popped up and things kind of went like this:
Me: “I’m going to buy a new DVD player.”
Saresh: “Now????”
Me: “Yes, NOW. I’ve had it with this player. I’m going to the store.”
Saresh: “Now???? Let me just see…”
Me: “No – you can’t fix it, and even if you somehow got it to start playing it will just stop in the middle of the movie. I just want a player that will play my DVDs!”
My mom and sister are watching us like a ping pong match. DD is standing there going, “Aren’t we going to watch the movie?” Finally, my sister says (as if she thinks this is all normal), “Well if you’re going, I’ll drive you.” Saresh says to wait, we argue some more and –
“It’s not a good time to buy a DVD player. What about Blu-ray? You can’t get an old player now!”
Me: “Uh – yes I can. I’ll get a cheap one – I don’t care.”
Saresh: “Let me look on Consumer Reports…”
I’ll save you the boring details of the CR report and just say that my sister and I left. I ranted in the car because I can tell he’s pissed at me, but I was going to watch Enchanted that night if it killed me. Who cared if it’s 8:30 by the time we got home and all 5 of us had to be up and ready for church by 8 am! Who cared if no one else wanted to even watch the movie anymore! I realized I had left the land of rationality far behind me at that point, but I wasn’t to be deterred.
Saresh called us 2 times in Circuit City, both calls ending in me cutting off conversation with, “I just want a DVD player that plays my discs!” I scared a teenage boy working at Circuit City – I probably looked like Cruella DeVille on a rampage to get Dalmatian puppies. I got a nice Sony 1-disc player for $60 (which Saresh pointed out was twice my original budget of $30, but he told me not to get an off brand!), took it home, hooked it up and we watched Enchanted.
My sister and mother proceeded to make fun of me behind my back (very mature) because they think I’m a raving lunatic. Never mind that Mom gave me the $60 to buy it (she’s the poster child for enablers) and Sister volunteered to drive – neither said anything like, “Calm down” or “It’s okay – we’ll watch something else.” So, Saresh is ticked at them for making fun of me (and I thank him for that!), and he’s ticked at me because I didn’t consult him and we didn’t talk about it – I just went out and bought a player (something I assure you I never do – well, maybe once every 10 years or so). We didn’t speak to each other the rest of the night.
After mom and sister leave, we finally talk rationally about the DVD player and how to avoid these kinds of blow-ups in the future. However, I can’t say I regret my moment of irrationality, as I’ve happily been able to watch any disc I want. Of course, now I have to live forever with a family story of the night CBC flipped out and bought a DVD player and made everyone stay up until 11 to watch Enchanted (which was very good, by the way).
———————————————————-
Epilogue (yes, there’s actually more to this ridiculous story):
One of Saresh’s arguments against buying a new DVD player was that “they all do these kinds of things” (i.e. get all funky and don’t play your discs). I don’t buy this, but he seemed to believe it. So even though we’d talked the DVD blow-up out, I think he was still waiting for that “I told you so!” moment. His first complaint was that this player didn’t have a particular sound feature the other one did – I looked through the manual and found it. Then one night, Charlotte’s Web didn’t play. He says from the other room in a self-satisfied-I-told-you-so-voice, “I’ve got bad news for you. It’s started skipping.”
DD always wants to put the videos in herself, so I suspect this has more to do with sticky toddler fingers than the DVD player. So I take the disc out and sure enough, there is some kind of goo stuck all over the playing side of the disc. I wash it and the disc plays just fine. I think he was actually disappointed.
He seems to be begrudgingly coming to like this player though, being all reliable as it is and having new-fangled features (a boon to any man). I actually heard him make a snide comment about our old player the other day.

It still cracks me up that you love Buffy.
But then again, if I am completely honest I have a quite a collection of trashy romance novels in a garbage bag in my closet.
Ang wants a big TV. I keep saying no because I want furniture more. heh. I’m teaching ballroom dancing purely to finance these cute dining room chairs I’ve got my eye on.
We got Enchanted too – has every girl in America seen that one by now?

OMG. You guys are writing the funniest stuff this week. I love this argument; mainly because it could be me and mine having it.
When Saresh is ready to spring for blu-ray or whatever, just donate the one you have now to a school teacher.
And, yes, we love Enchanted, too. I think my daughter has watched about 5 times since I bought it last month.

Go, CBC! You realize every Easter for the rest of your life that story will be told. How funny!

LOL, that’s hilarious. CBC, besides that, the old player had been used its worth and then some LOL. It’s not like you were wasting money then. By the time you, Saresh and DD were to go to the theater, it would cost you at LEAST $25. So tell him you’re sparing him the later cost plus headache hehehe

$60 for a name-brand DVD player that works is a great deal! Sometimes you just have to do what needs to be done, research be damned. What is up with guys needing to research every little thing? We bought a car a few months ago, and G knew going into it that we were going to get the car that we got, but he still had to spend 3 weeks researching other cars “just in case.” Riiiiiidiculous.
I want to see Enchanted but am slightly embarassed about it because I don’t have kids.

CBC- FYI the post says it is by CA.
You could always buy a blu-ray and then you could use the old DVD player in a new room (like your daughter’s) and then everyone is happy. My hubby and I fight over DVD stuff too but it is mostly why one wants to buy a movie and the other doesn’t lol. My son is always touching and putting the DVDs in the player sometimes backwards. He is now on DVD probation because he broke one in half!
CA-remember when Little Momma use to pull all you DVDs out and put them on the floor?
D – I owned almost EVERY Disney movie before I had my children do not get embarassed I am actually about to do a review of the movie!

“My son is always touching and putting the DVDs in the player sometimes backwards. He is now on DVD probation because he broke one in half!”
Middle Chen did that last year. Snapped a Spiderman DVD in two pieces. ARGH. They are not allowed to get into that drawer now because with three of them constantly putting their fingers all over stuff, everything is getting broken.

yeah – why the heck did this post show up as written by me? That’s happened before. weird.
CBC – go in and edit this post. Then save it. Maybe I accidentally clicked on this one in the draft box and resaved it, making it look like it was mine?

I am soooooo glad that there is another Buffy fan out there besides me!!! K makes fun of me about it sometimes. He just doesn’t get it

Ok – I tried editing and saving, but it still says CA wrote it. Oh well – you all could tell from the characters who wrote it! LOL
D – we once *thought* we were going to buy a TV (years ago – still haven’t) – he researched and researched, and visited store after store. Never bought one. This process has been repeated numerous times. He was HORRIFIED that I just went out and bought a player without checking anything. Hee hee (and now’s the time to get an old player if you want one because they prices have dropped way down!).
Wurdy – BtVS is the bomb. CA and my husband find my obsession amusing, but I look at it as cheap stress reduction therapy. And science – I find new stuff in the episodes no matter how much I watch them! Like, speaking of Enchanted, I just noticed that Amy Adams was a guest on BtVS in season 5! She was a hick cousin of Tara’s that wanted to take her back home. She was so mean – very un-enchanted type character.

Oh yeah – I added a BtVS category, so any other old posts will be in there – not much (yet LOL).

Ah, CBC, you’re speaking my language. I like the season where there was a lot of er…attraction…going on between Buffy and Spike. What fun! Vampire Slayer shagging a vampire! I need to start renting some of the seasons and watching. Dang, I can’t believe they took it off the air!

Well, I have to admit I’m one of those die hard wish Angel and Buffy would end up back together people (I know, I was supposed to move on – but seriously, I just wanted to gag with that whole Angel/Cordelia love plot line on Angel – ick). I liked the Buffy/Spike thing when it was going on, but still hoped she would end up with Angel when the show ended, or at least give some better hint that was going to happen. Spike was more about punishing herself, and James Marsters is darn hot so he could be in every ep as far as I was concerned, but I still wanted the Angel thing to work out. I’m just romantic about vampires that way, I guess. LOL
Sorry for all you non-Buffy people – you have to be bored or thinking I’m nuts (or both!). My old Buffy discussion pals were old co-workers I don’t see too often anymore, so now you’ll just have to indulge Wurdygirl and me.

LOL…this is sooooo funny! I’ve been a closet Buffy and Angel watcher all these years and have found few people to talk to about it.
I was hoping Buffy would get back with Angel too, but I did like Cordelia in the spin off. I didn’t want them getting too cozy though…always hanging on for the possibility that Angel and Buffy could make it work. I also really liked the season where Darla came back.
That said, BtVS was a much better show. At the time, K would call me every night just to see how the day went. It just so happened that he liked to call me during Buffy and I’d be so distracted that he’d have to repeat himself a lot. I finally just admitted to him that I needed to watch Buffy and asked if he could call me either earlier or later. This is where the teasing first began.
Anyway, I’ve tried to find a show to give me some sense of satisfaction since those went off the air. I recently found out that the BBC has been making new episodes of Dr. Who. So, I ordered those. The kids and I really like them, but not as much as Buffy. However, there is also a spin off of Dr. Who, also put out by BBC, that is called Torchwood. It’s supposed to be a sexy, supernatural kind of show starring….James Marsters!!! I’m going to have to go back and watch some of the trailers on the BBC website. I just might order those too.

Yes, the new season episodes of Dr. Who start this Saturday on the Sci-Fi channel
I never got into Buffy much, but do watch reruns of Angel on occassion..which are all new to me..I always find shows after they’re off the air..except for Charmed. I loved that show. I watch old episodes ALL the time. Sometimes, the craziest shows are such a stress relief. Dang I wish I could just freeze stuff or blow it up like Piper hahaha

I’m so behind the times. I have just basic cable and do not get the Sci-Fi channel. I just found out about them bringing Dr. Who back. I was pretty excited…not as excited as I’d be if they brought Buffy back, but excited nontheless.
I loved Charmed too! It’s funny how I love these type of shows. I’ve always been especially fond of shows with vampires and witches. I was on the BBC America website last night and saw that they have another show called Hex about a group of witches. I didn’t get a chance to really look at it, but it sounds right up my alley.
I remember Dark Shadows. I was very young when they showed it, but I did watch reruns and loved it. Barnabas Collins…ahhhhhhhh.

Hex was…alright. I watched it, but it was very.. strange. I am usually into the shows with supernatural stuff too, but I really didn’t enjoy Hex that much. It’s not that much about witches as much as about the occult, devil worshipers and the antichrist. Classic good people against bad ones. I really wasn’t that impressed by it to be honest. If you can find it online, I’d watch it that way if you’re really that interested in it, but compared to other shows, I was clearly disappointed.
