Kal Penn and BtVS

So, those of you who have been reading the blog a while know that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favorite show of all time. I like to watch an episode here and there to unwind from the day, etc. A few nights ago, I watched an ep and thought, “Man - that guy looks familiar.” He was! For those of you with the DVD set at home, Episode 5 from Season 4 is “Beer Bad” and Kal Penn plays this annoying, know-it-all frat boy who gets turned into a Neanderthal (literally).

Kal Penn

For those of you that participated in the lengthy “The Namesake” discussion, Kal Penn played Gogol (and for you less hoity toity movie watchers, he was the Indian kid in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle). Apparently he’s on House this season, but I haven’t watched it.

So if you’re a Kal Penn fan, you should watch that old BtVS episode - a “before he was sorta kinda famous” time. Plus, it’s just funny to see him dressed up like a Neanderthal. Apparently he’s guested on a bunch of TV shows, but as much as I’ve watched BtVS, I never noticed him before.

Again, I just have to mention how Joss Whedon is a genius - so ahead of his time, casting Indians before it was the “in” thing to do. All bow to the Joss-man.

I love Kal Penn.. I’ve seen the Nameske and I’ve also seen him in other movies like “Where’s the Party, Yaar?” Looking on IMDB he’s been in quite a few movies/tv shows we’ve missed. Also I’ve been watching him on house… He’s just ok in that show…

Random tangent… he’s one of my Indian friend’s cousins. :)

LOL, that’s cool! He’s also been on Angel and 24 besides being in Van Wilder as well. Yes, he has been on House this season and has done a really great job! I watch House all the time!

ooooh. I like House. Not that I ever get to watch it. hmph.

I can’t believe you own Buffy on DVD. (muffled giggle). As long as I’ve known you, I STILL cannot picture you loving Star Trek and all things Sci Fi. It still mystifies me. :P

You might be concerned if you knew how many times I’ve watched those DVDs.

I’ve only stopped short of owning my very own Starfleet pin and attending Star Trek conventions (but I know I would enjoy them). You are no longer a stealth nerd if you actually attend a ST convention - so I do have appearances to keep up.

My Buffy obsession amuses Saresh to no end.

I’m quite intrigued with this new Fox show now - New Amsterdam. Any thing involving immortality is right up my alley. ;)

Another random Kal Penn factoid: he’s teaching a class this semester at University of Pennsylvania about Asians in the Media.

He also made and appearance in the most recent Superman movie. DH and I were pleased that he wasn’t necessarily playing an Indian guy; he was one of the henchman. And I love seeing him on House - so glad it’s going to be on again soon!
